A bit of history:
A spittoon is a container or bowl, traditionally used as a spitting tray, especially while using tobacco. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, they were often used in areas where people chewed tobacco. The word comes from Dutch and refers to the use of the box to “spit” (wag its tail). Nowadays they are much less common, but you can still sometimes see them in historic buildings or as antiques objects
